AyamPanas Stars: 9 out of 10. Cross town for it

Hai Kah Lang (海脚人) in Taman Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, is a seafood noodle shop where you choose the seafood, the noodle and the soup, and its first shop here holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Its founder, Steven Tan, comes from a Teochew family that has made fish balls in Balakong for more than 40 years, and he ran a seafood steamboat restaurant there until the pandemic shut it in 2020. He opened Hai Kah Lang, Hokkien for "people of the sea", as a breakfast noodle shop in January 2022, across the road from his own seafood shop. The signature clear soup is made the Teochew way, from fish bones and the water the fish balls are soaked in, and the seafood arrives daily, almost all of it wild-caught, from Sabah, Indonesia and the Philippines. It opens every day from 8am to 5pm, so come for breakfast or lunch, not dinner.

What to Order at Hai Kah Lang

Build a bowl: pick fish, shellfish or a mix, then one of eight noodles or rice congee, and one of five soups: the signature clear soup, clear soup with evaporated milk, curry, tomato or tom yum. The mixed seafood noodles and the fish head noodle soup with milk are the bowls most tables order.

  • Mixed Seafood Noodle or Congee
  • Signature Sauce Mix Seafood Dry Noodle
  • Fish Head Milk Soup Noodle
  • Signature Jumbo Prawn Noodle, with a prawn of about 170 grams
  • Tom Yam Tiger Prawn Noodle
  • Leopard Coral Grouper Noodle
  • Lala Noodle
  • Crab Meat Porridge

On the Hai Kah Lang menu, the noodles share the page with Teochew snacks such as fried fish cake, Teochew oyster omelette, fried soft shell crab, fish balls and fresh oysters, and drinks such as an icy coconut kopi and the house Hainan coffee. Expect to spend around RM20 to RM40 a person.

For seafood noodles in Cheras, fish head noodles near Yulek or a Michelin Bib Gourmand breakfast in KL, this is the shop the Hai Kah Lang name started from. The chain has since opened at TRX, Sri Petaling, Sea Park, Kepong, Mid Valley, KLIA2, Johor Bahru and Singapore, and calls this first shop Yulek.
