Soong Kee Beef Noodle, Jalan Tun H.S. Lee
Soong Kee Beef Noodle (頌記) on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, near Petaling Street in Kuala Lumpur, has been selling beef noodles since 1945, and is best known for its dry beef noodles under a dark mince of beef and pork.
It began as a push cart. Siew Koy Soong, who came from Tai Po in Hong Kong, started selling noodles from a cart on what is now Jalan Tun Tan Siew Sin in 1945, with a recipe built on the Hakka noodles of Tai Po. The shop now stands at the corner of that street and Jalan Tun H.S. Lee. His son Siew Wei Hann took over in the 1980s and runs it with his brother Wai Seong in the kitchen, and the family has opened more Soong Kee branches since. The shop carries a Malaysia Book of Records title as the oldest beef noodle restaurant, and it opens every day from 10am to 9.30pm.
What to Order at Soong Kee
The dry beef noodles are the signature: springy egg noodles under a dark mince of beef and pork, seasoned with fermented soybean paste, fish sauce and a blend of herbs and spices, with choy sum on top. A bowl of light beef broth comes on the side, with beef slices and beef balls in it.
- Dry Beef Noodles - from RM12, with the minced beef sauce, choy sum and a side of broth
- Tripe Beef Noodles - from RM12, the soup version, with beef slices, beef balls and beef stomach
- Beef balls - made fresh every morning, in both bowls
- Chicken porridge - sold under the Lao You Ji Porridge name in the same shop
The noodles come with pickled greens, and the house chilli is for dipping the beef. On the Soong Kee menu, the beef noodles start from about RM12 a bowl, dry or in soup, at late-2025 prices.
For beef noodles in KL's Chinatown, beef ball noodles near Petaling Street or a bowl with more than eighty years behind it in the city centre, Soong Kee is the one on the corner of Jalan Tun H.S. Lee and Jalan Tun Tan Siew Sin.
