Mardhiyyah Hotel and Suites, Shah Alam

Irene, Shah Alam
Irene is a new cafe in Shah Alam with a deliberately shadowy, art-led room — closer to a considered interior than the usual bright neighbourhood coffee shop. The kitchen goes further than most cafes of its kind: it can put out a full meal, not just something to sit beside a flat white. What to Order at Irene The garlic shio pan is the bake to start with — crisp to the bite, buttery-soft through the middle, and aromatic with garlic, parsley and cheese. For something more substantial there is mushroom soup with sliced baguette, or a tempeh chickpea salad dressed in roasted sesame sauce. On a day when none of that appeals, the crunchy chicken burger with an iced dark chocolate — sweetened to your preference — is the indulgent pairing the kitchen suggests. For a cafe in Shah Alam or shio pan in Selangor, Irene is the one to sit in rather than take away.

Ruang Makan Sejagat, Shah Alam
Ruang Makan Sejagat serves Indonesian home cooking in Section 13, Shah Alam, built out of its founders' balik kampung travels through Banyuwangi and Surabaya. The cooking is honest and hearty rather than refined, which is the point of it. What to Order at Ruang Makan Sejagat The chicken is brined before a final flash-fry, and comes with nasi butter scented with daun limau — a citrus lift that keeps the richness in check. Three sambals cover three different heats: sambal balado is fiery red, sambal hijau is friendlier and rounded out with tomatoes, and sambal matah stays raw and bright under hot oil. Choose by how much you want to suffer. Round the table out with tongkol suwir (shredded skipjack tuna), keli goreng, crisp fried spinach, and paru balado, which is punchy with spice. For Indonesian food in Shah Alam or nasi campur in Section 13, Sejagat is worth knowing for the sambals alone.

La Chacjo, Setia Alam
La Chacjo is a wood-fired pizzeria and coffee counter in Setia Alam, and it is more playful than most kitchens working a Neapolitan oven. What to Order at La Chacjo Start with the Pizza Flight — a box of two six-inch wood-fired pizzas, which solves the problem of wanting to try more than one. The pizzas themselves are where the invention is. Yumbonara takes carbonara as its brief, crowned with creamy egg yolk, cream cheese, chicken ham, mozzarella, mushrooms and basil. Ayam Gepuk goes fully local, loaded with crispy fried chicken, burnt cabbage and spicy sambal. To drink, the Matcha Cold Foam is layered over coconut water rather than milk, which makes it far more refreshing than it sounds. For pizza in Setia Alam or a sambal pizza in Selangor, La Chacjo is the one taking risks with the topping list.

Garden Pizza, Shah Alam

Mana Ramen, Shah Alam
Mana Ramen is a ramen shop in Shah Alam that cuts its own noodles and simmers its own broths — and roasts its own coffee beans, which is not a combination you often find under one roof. What to Order at Mana Ramen Tantanmen is the recommendation to start with: thick, nutty and smoky, topped with teriyaki chicken, a jammy egg, spring onions and chilli oil. Spicy Miso Ramen is the richer, more robust classic, served with chicken chashu. If you would rather not have noodles, the Karaage Rice Bowl is a straightforward donburi with deep-fried chicken kept crunchy outside and juicy within. For ramen in Shah Alam or house-cut noodles in Selangor, Mana is worth the wait it asks for.

Dapo & Dough, Shah Alam
Dapo & Dough is a home-based bakery-cafe in Shah Alam — a small, sunlit room built around sourdough rather than a full restaurant kitchen. What to Order at Dapo & Dough The sandwiches come out oven-fresh and warmly fragrant; the one to order is smoked salmon with herbed cream cheese, cherry tomatoes and baby spinach. The more interesting plate is the house take on Turkish cilbir — creamy eggs over tangy yogurt, finished with melted butter and chilli flakes, with crackly toast for pushing it around. It runs Monday to Friday and is built for a family breakfast rather than a quick one. For sourdough in Shah Alam or a weekday breakfast in Selangor worth sitting down for, Dapo & Dough is the neighbourhood version done properly.
