Kedah’s recent air quality
Built from our own archive of hourly readings, so it shows what actually happened here rather than only what is happening now.
Highest station reading in Kedah each hour, on the US EPA AQI scale. A break in the line is an hour with no reporting station, not a reading of zero.

What drives air quality in Kedah
Why this state’s readings move the way they do.
Kedah is Malaysia’s rice bowl, and its air quality reflects that as much as anything industrial. The flat paddy plain around Alor Setar, the industrial belt at Kulim and Sungai Petani, and the island district of Langkawi all sit within one state boundary and can read very differently from one another.
Main local sources
- Open burning of rice stubble after the paddy harvest, a recognised local source
- Industry around Kulim Hi-Tech Park and Sungai Petani
- Transboundary haze arriving across the Strait of Malacca
- Dry-season dust on the open paddy plain
How the year runs here
The northern states tend to be driest in the first months of the year and again during the southwest monsoon, and Kedah’s readings often climb around the post-harvest burning periods rather than only during regional haze events.
Readings on this page cover Alor Setar, Sungai Petani, Kulim, Langkawi and Jitra, to the extent that stations in those areas are reporting. Each figure is named with the station it came from, so you can judge how close it is to you.
Jerebu and haze in Kedah
When the air here crosses into unhealthy territory, we write it up.
We publish a dated bulletin for every day on which any Malaysian state reaches AQI 101 or above — the point at which health advice starts naming who should stay indoors. The bulletins are built from the same hourly archive as the charts above, so they record what the stations actually read rather than restating a headline.

Asked about this state specifically.
Is the air in Langkawi the same as in Alor Setar?
Often not. Langkawi is an island roughly 50 km offshore with sea breezes that disperse pollution quickly, while Alor Setar sits in the middle of the paddy plain. Both are in Kedah, and the figure on this page is whichever reporting station in the state is currently highest.
Why does Kedah’s reading rise after the harvest?
Burning rice stubble to clear fields is a long-standing practice in the northern paddy belt and is a recognised contributor to local air quality, separate from the transboundary haze that affects the whole country. It tends to show up as short, sharp rises rather than the multi-day episodes a regional haze event produces.
