What drives air quality in Kelantan
Why this state’s readings move the way they do.
Kelantan sits on the northeast coast with the Titiwangsa range along its western edge, which tends to shelter it from the haze that crosses the Strait of Malacca onto the west coast. Its own air quality is shaped more by the paddy plain around Kota Bharu, by local burning, and by the monsoon that dominates its weather from November.
Main local sources
- Agricultural burning on the Kota Bharu paddy plain
- Land clearing and plantation activity inland
- Occasional smoke drifting from across the Thai border
- Dry inter-monsoon spells with little wind to disperse local emissions
How the year runs here
The northeast monsoon from roughly November to March brings Kelantan heavy, sustained rain — the same rain that causes its annual flooding generally also gives it some of the cleanest air in the country. The driest months before it are when readings tend to climb.
Readings on this page cover Kota Bharu, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Gua Musang and Tumpat, to the extent that stations in those areas are reporting. Each figure is named with the station it came from, so you can judge how close it is to you.
Jerebu and haze in Kelantan
When the air here crosses into unhealthy territory, we write it up.
We publish a dated bulletin for every day on which any Malaysian state reaches AQI 101 or above — the point at which health advice starts naming who should stay indoors. The bulletins are built from the same hourly archive as the charts above, so they record what the stations actually read rather than restating a headline.

Asked about this state specifically.
Do Thai monitoring stations get counted as Kelantan’s reading?
No. Stations just across the border — Tak Bai is the nearest — fall inside the map area we request from the monitoring network, and an earlier version of this page did briefly count one of them as Kelantan. Every station is now tested against the actual state boundary with only enough tolerance for coastal rounding, which is far too little to reach across the Golok river.
Why is Kelantan often cleaner than the west coast during haze season?
The Titiwangsa range runs between the two, and the southwest monsoon that carries smoke from Sumatra arrives on the far side of it. That is a tendency, not a guarantee — smoke from fires closer to home, or a shift in wind, can raise Kelantan’s readings just as it can anywhere else.
