What drives air quality in Pahang

Why this state’s readings move the way they do.

Pahang is the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia and one of the most heavily forested, which tends to keep its baseline readings low. It is also enormous: the coast at Kuantan, the highlands at Cameron, and the interior around Jerantut are hundreds of kilometres and more than a thousand metres apart, and a single state figure covers all of them.

Main local sources

  • Land clearing and plantation fires in the interior during dry periods
  • Industrial and port activity around Kuantan and Gebeng
  • Haze drifting over from the west coast when the wind turns
  • Highland temperature inversions that can trap smoke in valleys

How the year runs here

The northeast monsoon from November brings Pahang’s east coast heavy rain and usually its cleanest air. Dry inter-monsoon spells, particularly in the interior, are when its readings are most likely to climb.

Readings on this page cover Kuantan, Temerloh, Bentong, Cameron Highlands, Jerantut and Raub, to the extent that stations in those areas are reporting. Each figure is named with the station it came from, so you can judge how close it is to you.

Jerebu and haze in Pahang

When the air here crosses into unhealthy territory, we write it up.

We publish a dated bulletin for every day on which any Malaysian state reaches AQI 101 or above — the point at which health advice starts naming who should stay indoors. The bulletins are built from the same hourly archive as the charts above, so they record what the stations actually read rather than restating a headline.

Pahang has had 7 such days in the last 13.

Air quality in Pahang: common questions

Asked about this state specifically.

Does this page show air quality in Cameron Highlands?

Only if a station there is currently reporting to the monitoring network. Pahang covers both the highlands and the coast, and the figure shown is the highest reporting station anywhere in the state — we name that station, so you can see whether it is anywhere near where you are.

Why is Pahang usually among the cleaner states?

It has a large forested interior, a relatively small industrial footprint, and the Titiwangsa range between it and the west coast haze corridor. That is a tendency rather than a rule, and it does not hold during a severe regional episode.

For how the index is calculated, why it differs from Malaysia’s official API, and where the data comes from, see the national air quality page.
