What drives air quality in Terengganu
Why this state’s readings move the way they do.
Terengganu runs along the South China Sea coast with the Titiwangsa range inland, a position that generally shelters it from the haze crossing the Strait of Malacca. Its own industrial footprint is concentrated in the south, around the Kerteh and Kemaman petrochemical corridor, while the rest of the state is largely coastal and forested.
Main local sources
- The petrochemical and industrial corridor around Kerteh and Kemaman
- Land clearing and plantation burning inland during dry spells
- Occasional haze drifting over the range when the wind turns
- Still conditions in the inter-monsoon months
How the year runs here
The northeast monsoon from November to March brings Terengganu sustained, heavy rain and generally its cleanest air of the year. The dry inter-monsoon months beforehand are when readings are most likely to rise.
Readings on this page cover Kuala Terengganu, Kemaman, Dungun, Kerteh and Besut, to the extent that stations in those areas are reporting. Each figure is named with the station it came from, so you can judge how close it is to you.
Jerebu and haze in Terengganu
When the air here crosses into unhealthy territory, we write it up.
We publish a dated bulletin for every day on which any Malaysian state reaches AQI 101 or above — the point at which health advice starts naming who should stay indoors. The bulletins are built from the same hourly archive as the charts above, so they record what the stations actually read rather than restating a headline.
Terengganu has had 6 such days in the last 13.

Asked about this state specifically.
Is Terengganu affected by haze?
Less than the west coast, because the Titiwangsa range sits between it and the direction the southwest monsoon carries smoke from. It is a tendency rather than protection — a severe episode, or a shift in wind, can still raise readings here.
Does the Kerteh industrial area affect the state’s figure?
It can, if the highest reporting station on a given day happens to be in that corridor. The station behind each figure is named on this page, so an industrial reading in the south is never silently presented as the whole state’s air.
For how the index is calculated, why it differs from Malaysia’s official API, and where the data comes from, see the national air quality page.
