What drives air quality in Selangor

Why this state’s readings move the way they do.

Selangor is the most industrialised and most densely populated state in Malaysia, and it wraps around Kuala Lumpur on every side, so the two share one airshed and usually one kind of day. Port Klang, the Shah Alam and Klang industrial belts, and the daily commuter traffic through the Klang Valley give the state a high baseline before any haze arrives.

Main local sources

  • Industrial activity across the Klang, Shah Alam and Subang belts
  • Port Klang shipping and the freight traffic serving it
  • The densest commuter traffic in the country, peaking morning and evening
  • Transboundary haze arriving directly off the Strait of Malacca

How the year runs here

Selangor is exposed on both counts: it has the country’s largest local emission load year-round, and it sits on the coast that the June–September southwest monsoon haze reaches first. Heavy rain is what usually resets it.

Readings on this page cover Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, Klang, Subang Jaya, Kajang, Port Klang and Rawang, to the extent that stations in those areas are reporting. Each figure is named with the station it came from, so you can judge how close it is to you.

Jerebu and haze in Selangor

When the air here crosses into unhealthy territory, we write it up.

We publish a dated bulletin for every day on which any Malaysian state reaches AQI 101 or above — the point at which health advice starts naming who should stay indoors. The bulletins are built from the same hourly archive as the charts above, so they record what the stations actually read rather than restating a headline.

Selangor has had 13 such days in the last 13.

Air quality in Selangor: common questions

Asked about this state specifically.

Is Selangor’s reading the same as Kuala Lumpur’s?

They are usually close, because KL sits inside Selangor’s outer boundary and the two share an airshed, but they are measured separately and reported separately here. Stations in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya are tested against those territories first precisely so they are not counted as Selangor’s.

Which part of Selangor usually reads highest?

The industrial and port districts along the coast and the Klang Valley corridor carry more local emissions than the quieter northern and eastern districts. Rather than guess, this page names the specific station behind the figure, so you can see where in the state the reading came from.

For how the index is calculated, why it differs from Malaysia’s official API, and where the data comes from, see the national air quality page.
