What drives air quality in Melaka

Why this state’s readings move the way they do.

Melaka is small, flat and almost entirely coastal, facing directly onto the Strait of Malacca. That position makes it one of the first parts of the peninsula to feel smoke carried over from Sumatra, and the state is narrow enough that a single station’s reading is usually representative of most of it.

Main local sources

  • Transboundary haze crossing the Strait of Malacca from Sumatra
  • Traffic through the Melaka City conurbation and along the coastal trunk road
  • Port and light industrial activity
  • Still, humid conditions that hold particulates near ground level

How the year runs here

Melaka’s exposure peaks with the southwest monsoon between June and September, when the prevailing wind comes straight across the Strait. Outside that window it is more often its own traffic that sets the figure.

Readings on this page cover Melaka City, Alor Gajah, Jasin and Ayer Keroh, to the extent that stations in those areas are reporting. Each figure is named with the station it came from, so you can judge how close it is to you.

Jerebu and haze in Melaka

When the air here crosses into unhealthy territory, we write it up.

We publish a dated bulletin for every day on which any Malaysian state reaches AQI 101 or above — the point at which health advice starts naming who should stay indoors. The bulletins are built from the same hourly archive as the charts above, so they record what the stations actually read rather than restating a headline.

Melaka has had 10 such days in the last 13.

Air quality in Melaka: common questions

Asked about this state specifically.

Why does Melaka feel the haze before other states?

It sits on the narrowest, most directly exposed stretch of the Strait of Malacca coast. When smoke from Sumatran fires is carried northeast on the southwest monsoon, the Melaka–Port Dickson coastline is among the first land it reaches.

Is one station enough to represent the whole of Melaka?

Melaka is the second-smallest state and its districts are within about 40 km of one another, so a single reading travels further here than it would in Pahang or Sarawak. We still show how many stations are reporting, so you can judge the coverage behind the figure yourself.

For how the index is calculated, why it differs from Malaysia’s official API, and where the data comes from, see the national air quality page.
