What drives air quality in Perlis
Why this state’s readings move the way they do.
Perlis is Malaysia’s smallest state — small enough that a single station is usually describing most of it. It is almost entirely agricultural, dominated by paddy land, and it borders Thailand along its northern edge, which means both its weather and occasionally its smoke arrive from outside the country.
Main local sources
- Open burning of paddy stubble after harvest
- Smoke drifting across the Thai border during the regional burning season
- Dry-season conditions on exposed agricultural land
- Limestone quarrying in the hills along the border
How the year runs here
The far north is at its driest early in the year, and Perlis’ readings tend to respond to agricultural burning cycles — both its own and those across the border — more than to the Sumatran haze that dominates further south.
Readings on this page cover Kangar, Arau, Padang Besar and Kuala Perlis, to the extent that stations in those areas are reporting. Each figure is named with the station it came from, so you can judge how close it is to you.
Jerebu and haze in Perlis
When the air here crosses into unhealthy territory, we write it up.
We publish a dated bulletin for every day on which any Malaysian state reaches AQI 101 or above — the point at which health advice starts naming who should stay indoors. The bulletins are built from the same hourly archive as the charts above, so they record what the stations actually read rather than restating a headline.

Asked about this state specifically.
Why does Perlis often show no current data?
It is the smallest state by a wide margin and has correspondingly few monitoring stations reporting to the network. When none of them has published in the last two hours we show no figure at all rather than an estimate or a stale number.
Does smoke from Thailand affect Perlis?
Perlis borders Thailand directly and agricultural burning is seasonal on both sides, so smoke can cross. The reading on this page, though, comes only from stations inside Perlis — Thai stations are filtered out by boundary, not by name.
For how the index is calculated, why it differs from Malaysia’s official API, and where the data comes from, see the national air quality page.
